In AN ALASKAN APPRENTICESHIP, John Bousman tells the tales of his 50 years of mountain climbing-from the Shawangunks to McKinley Park, from Katahdin to the Cascades, from the Tetons and Yosemite to the Canadian Rockies and the Dolomites. In pithy, self-deprecating prose and evocative line drawings, Bousman describes how, while studying to be a civil engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he gravitated to the outing club, comprised of people who were every bit as unsuited for social contact as he was. He set his sights on Alpine climbing and, having joined the U.S. Army as an officer, hoped he would be sent abroad, where the world's highest peaks beckoned. Instead, in May of 1962 Bousman found himself on his way to Alaska-a hard land of alpine peaks all gleaming in ice and snow, a land quite untouched by the hand of man. As it turned out, he could hardly have selected a better place for his apprenticeship. Perhaps the greatest peaks had already been climbed, but the lesser ones in their scores were virgins-a vast, unexplored land, ripe for exploration. Now all he would have to do would be to learn how to deal with their dangers. It was to be an apprenticeship of great possibilities.

Not for Mountain Climbers Only!

An Alaskan Apprenticeship: Learning to Climb in A Hard Land is a magnum opus, a memoir of over 50 years of "a life spent climbing" as the author puts it. Beautifully illustrated with dozens of Bousman's precision drawings of mountains, mammals, and other marvels of nature and engineering, it reads like a fascinating novel… carefully constructed and never boring.
Only 5 of the 21 chapters are set in Alaska, although the hard land and times of this apprenticeship are obviously dear to John Bousman's heart. As his two year assignment to Alaska as an MIT-trained engineer and U S Army lieutenant came to an end, John's mountaineering mastery expanded, taking him from the Canadian Rockies, the Cascades, and Yosemite to Mount Katahdin in Maine; from the Wyoming Tetons to Big Bend country in the American Southwest; and ultimately across the waters to Britain, Spain, the Dolomites of Italy, and Mts. Kenya and Kilimanjaro in Africa. In the last chapter John revisits the Alaska Highway once again, marveling at the changes since he first drove its 1500 miles of then-unpaved road 48 years earlier.
It's bound in a large 8" x 10" durable soft cover format with the author's photo of Mt. McKinley on the front, and what could be a selfie of the author scarfing up a Subway sandwich (product placement?) inside the back. An Alaskan Apprenticeship is the sort of book I want to leave out on the coffee table for its fine art and savor a chapter at a time, with no worries about forgetting the names of John's climbing buddies long before reaching the summit (page 425). An always interesting and often funny story of a full and precipitous life on the rocks. Get it: you won't regret it!
